It is indeed cut and spliced gameplay to be distributed on a 20min doujin VHS tape back in 1988. While unfortunately not useful as a superplay per se, the purpose of the tape at the time was to show players techniques for each stage so they can watch and practice. I wouldn't call it "fake" as in misrepresenting something. The Gradius II 10-loop video I uploaded (also a VHS rip) is the same.

@@Toarcade Ah I see, so it's not meant to be a record, that makes more sense! :) Just keeping an eye open for those end of level 4 safe spot strategies as always ;) So tricky compared to the rest of the game.

Thank you! Yes, I've been back and unfortunately this store was finally closed in 2022 and the building was demolished. There is no other store with this business concept (selling only new old stock) in Japan currently, nor was there ever in the past... I talked to the owner and he explained that he was the only store who pursued this concept of buying up old unsold stock and sell it at (at the time) super high prices. His customers were primarily other game stores and hardcore collectors, not the usual gamer that would go to a store to buy games to play... it was quite unique :) But of course you still have other retro game stores in Japan with a large selection, though prices have soared. Surugaya, Mandarake, Super Potato are all worth a visit. Independent stores like this one have slowly disappeared for the most part, though.

@@Toarcade Totally missed this reply. Thanks for the info. Out of curiosity, what is the ultimate reason why you didn't stay to live in Japan? It was always a dream of mine to live in Japan but life had other plans, I always wonder why most westerners just end up coming back instead of staying? Cheers.

@@Interlocutor_ I spent time in Japan for a study abroad program during undergrad, so staying long-term was never an option (or a desire). I can't speak for the other returning expats, but one theme I've noticed is that even after many years and despite speaking excellent Japanese, some folks just don't feel like they ever really belong because they don't look the part. E.g. you feel like you're at your home and staff members will still rush away to find an Englishspeaker for you like it's your first Japan vacation.

@@Toarcade I see, that's a common sentiment I've read about before. I didn't grow up in my motherland and have always felt like an outsider despite speaking perfect English. I don't think the feeling of not belonging/being an outsider would be a problem for me at all. I've felt that way already my entire life and it doesn't bother me anymore. Anyway, thanks for sharing that bit of your personal experience and I hope you post other retro game related content again in the future. Cheers.
